New Research Master in Sociology and Communication

In the fall semester of 2026, the IKMB, together with the Institute of Sociology (IfS), will launch a new master's program: the Research Master in Sociology and Communication. The program is interdisciplinary and all classes are taught in English. This research master's program provides students with the perfect introduction to research in both communication and media science and sociology. The goal is to write a master's thesis at the end of the program that can be published in a scientific journal.

The Research Master's in Sociology and Communication covers many exciting and important topics that will be of great value later on in an academic or private sector career. Both theoretical and empirical scientific work is taught. During the program, students complete a research internship either at the IKMB or IfS, which allows them to gain initial experience in university research.

The Research Master's program is aimed at students who have completed a bachelor's degree in social sciences, sociology, communication and media science, or political science. Students from other bachelor's programs (e.g., economics, psychology, geography, computer science) may also be admitted to the Research Master's program, provided they can make up for the missing knowledge with a maximum of 60 ECTS credits of additional coursework.

It is also possible to choose the Research Master as a minor program (30 ECTS).
