Description

The workshop aims to provide doctoral students doing their PhD on a project related to communication and media research at Swiss universities or universities of applied sciences with an opportunity to discuss their dissertation research in a constructive and safe atmosphere. It is relevant for PhD students at all stages of the dissertation process.

Students will receive feedback on their overall projects, theoretical frameworks, methodologies, and/or research designs from senior scholars and fellow students who review the proposals. By reviewing other students' papers, students also improve their skills in giving constructive feedback on research proposals.

Senior scholars will give insights and advice on questions related to the PhD projects with a focus on:

  • Theoretical developments: Emerging perspectives, theories, and concepts in the field of communication and media research
  • Methodological developments: Qualitative and quantitative methodologies, empirical challenges and solutions, and statistical analyses.
  • General argumentation: General argumentation in a monograph or a cumulative dissertation to connect different studies, theories or perspectives.

Participation fee

Participation is free to all students whose papers are accepted. The SACM will support the workshop. Thus, you must be a current SACM member at the time of the conference to participate. Please register via the SACM website.

Application and submission

  • Students apply with a short proposal describing the (planned) research by outlining the research problem and gap, core theories or perspectives, methodology, or empirical results, depending on the stage of the project(s).
    • Format: one page, excl. figures/tables/references, in English).
    • Style: freely configured
    • By submitting a proposal, students confirm their intention to participate in the workshop in person. Online participation will not be possible.
    • Deadline: Friday, November 27, 2026
  • Once accepted, students must hand in a short paper of approximately 4-6 pages (as PDF, in English). This paper should focus on the core aspects the student would like to discuss at the workshop. Deadline: March 26, 2027.
  • After submitting the short papers, every student will receive a fellow student’s paper, before the PhD workshop, to prepare feedback at the workshop as a peer expert.
  • In the workshop, students will briefly present their project and questions (about 15 min). Then, they will receive expert feedback from one peer and one senior expert, as well as feedback from other peers and senior experts. More details and the workshop program will be sent to all participants beforehand
