Professorin und Institutsdirektorin

Ich bin Professorin für politische Kommunikation und Direktorin des Instituts für Kommunikations- und Medienwissenschaft der Universität Bern seit 2010. Besonders interessiert mich, wie politische Kommunikation sich durch Prozesse der Digitalisierung und Transnationalisierung verändert. Ich möchte verstehen, welche Kräfte politische Debatten gestalten (können), wie diese beschaffen sind und wie sie sich beeinflussen. Darüber hinaus interessiert mich, wie unsere ideologischen Einstellungen unser Informationsverhalten prägen und welche Effekte daraus resultieren.
Im Augenblick forsche ich an einem Projekt, das vom Schweizer Nationalfonds und der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft finanziert wird. Wir fragen danach, wie politische Einstellungen unsere Informationsnutzung prägen und wie dadurch schliesslich auch unsere Einstellungen beeinflusst werden. Hierbei kombinieren wir Panel-Befragungen, mit Web-Tracking und Textanalysen.

Studiert habe ich Kommunikationswissenschaft mit Vertiefungen im Bereich Politikwissenschaft, Politikanalyse /-beratung und Kommunikationsforschung an der Universität Hohenheim (1995-2001, Diplom) und der Boston University (1999, MA). Meine Promotion schloss ich 2006 an der Universität Hohenheim ab zum Thema „Symbolische Netzwerke in Europa. Der Einfluss der nationalen Ebene auf europäische Öffentlichkeit. Deutschland und Frankreich im Vergleich“. Danach bin ich als Post-Doc-Stipendiatin an die FU Berlin. Dort forschte ich in der interdisziplinären Kollegforschergruppe „The Transformative Power of Europe“.
Forschungsaufenthalte brachten mich an die University of Washington (Seattle, USA) und an das Netherlands Institute of Advanced Studies. Zudem erhielt ich den Robert M. Worcester Prize für den besten Aufsatz im International Journal of Public Opinion Research, einen Zeitschriftenpreis der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Publizistik- und Kommunikationswissenschaft, den Wissenschaftspreis der Universität Hohenheim und den der Dr. Alois-Mock Europastiftung.

Im Augenblick forsche ich an einem Projekt, das vom Schweizer Nationalfonds und der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft finanziert wird. Wir fragen danach, wie politische Einstellungen unsere Informationsnutzung prägen und wie dadurch schliesslich auch unsere Einstellungen beeinflusst werden. Darüber hinaus forsche ich im Rahmen des Multidisciplinary Centers for Infectious Diseases an der Frage, wie sich Verschwörungstheorien verbreiten und arbeite an einem Projekt, dass sich mit der Performanz der algorithmischen Selektion von Suchmaschinen und Empfehlungssystemen beschäftigt.
